More Fun with Search Engines

Wired News has ressurected the old meme about Google‘s search engine: When you search for certain bad words in Google, the first result is a site devoted to George W. Bush. As most people know, Google prioritizes listings based on the text people use to link to them. Since lots of anti-Microsoft types linked to Microsoft with certain words, searching for more evil than satan himself returned Microsoft’s site at the top of the list. That was last year. Now, that search results in a huge list of sites that reported on the meme – ironically, all of the attention moved Microsoft off the evil list. (Just doing my part to bring them back.) It appears that this might not be the case this time, though- there has only been one link in Google’s index with those words, and Google shouldn’t have ranked it so high. They admit it could be “some kind of mistake.”
