AOL Users Face Virus Threat, maybe

Yet another email virus has received the ultimate virus honor: being mentioned on the TV news. This one is a password-stealing trojan horse specific to AOL. See the ZDNet article for more. Meanwhile, the LA Times wonders if McAfee’s Alert might have been crying wolf a bit. It seems this particular trojan, called “APStrojan.qa”, is over a year old. Here’s Symantec’s information, which states that the trojan is covered in their December 27, 1999 virus update. McAfee reports a “100% increase” in reports of the trojan, but that could mean there was one report last week and two this week. AOL hasn’t noticed any increase. Perhaps someone at McAfee is just bored. If you’re concerned about this or any virus, I recommend InoculateIT PE or AVP.
